Coaxial nanofibers of nickel/gadolinium oxide/nickel oxide as highly effective electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction

Cost-effective, active and stable electrocatalysts are crucial for hydrogen production via electrocatalytic water splitting. Here, we describe the preparation of novel nanofibers (NF) made Ni/Gd2O3/NiO heterostructures by electrospinning. The fabricated materials showed high performance evolution reaction (HER) with onset potential values 89 mV, which very close to those platinum (Pt). NiO chemical electronic properties were successfully optimized in coaxial heterostructures; NFs doped Gd3+ significantly enhanced its electrical conductivity promoted HER kinetics.
